Decided to finally start writing down some of the various stories going on in this brain of mine. However, they're not all one continuous story - I've got a few moments of the lives of various characters who'd fit in a Golden Sunrise-esque setting. Think something like the Abeyant Child story from last year - short segments of an individual's life. However, unlike that story, here they'll be compiled in a single thread so I don't spam the whole place with tons of stories. I'll also have a table of contents to organize them. I'll be retroactively including The Abeyant Child in this collection as well, but rather than simply posting it again, I'm going to simply link to it. I doubt I'll continue that particular thread, though - it was originally written for the GSAR!verse, not the Sunrise!verse which I will be using for this series. And just so you know, I won't use anyone's author avatars or characters. Such things are better left to RPs, where you can express them the way you think they are, rather than watch someone interpret them in a way you might not agree with. Rather, these will be stories of characters like Evelyn or Marida in the context of the Sunrise world - characters I've created, and the stories that go with them. I'll read these later, but I wanted to say that simply by the title I am jealous of the way you write and the imagery and meaning you have behind a simple sentence. |

Read both parts, they seem good! A few typos here and there, but I'm pretty lousy with those, so I certainly ain't judging XD I'm liking the story so far! It's nice to see more focus placed on the uniqueness of every Adept, and how not everyone learns the same. I look forward to reading more :3 |

That was a fun read! Though I'll say one thing, I did wonder a few times whether that was pure fiction or if parts of it were in fact your own past adapted within the verse. |

The Longest Night “Again.” Evelyn stood atop the hill, watching Anette repeat the routine. Though a simple staff kata meant for practice defensive maneuvers, she had instructed Anette to do one variation or another for the greater part of an hour now. Brothers, how the apprentice had changed in the past year. Despite being pushed for so long with chores and cleaning, made to stay awake late into the night rather than retire, to travel out a fair distance from the city, and now this training regiment, the girl simply gritted her teethed and pushed through it, determined to finish the routine. A far cry indeed from the young acolyte she’d been not ten months ago. Anette finished the routine, and Evelyn nodded. “Alright, a Shard spell now.” She could see the slight look of frustration, the desire to want to turn and lash out at her… but breathing heavily from the exertion, the girl fought it back, spun the staff to face forward and cast her spell. In contrast to the darkness of night, Anette gave off a faint glow as she pushed through the pain and fatigue and cast her psynergy. A glowing crystalline shard erupted from the ground, then dissolved away as the psynergy finished its job. Evelyn opened her mouth to give the command to repeat it, but in a flash of anger Anette put her foot down, thrust her staff out and cast it again. Evelyn couldn’t help but feel sympathy for the girl. The year had been hard – far more than a novice apprentice should have been made to go through. Evelyn’s own first year of training hadn’t been nearly as demanding… nor difficult. The Shard spell faded away, and with a yell and an upwards swing of her staff another spell was thrown forth – not a simple Shard spell, but a stronger Crystal Shard this time, the cluster of sharp crystals erupting from the ground in a radial pattern. It’d be obvious to anyone the girl was hurting, and not from any physical ill. “Enough.” The young apprentice looked up to Evelyn, her face contorted in… what, anguish? Self-loathing? It wasn’t easy to tell simply by the starlight, but the girl composed herself then turned to stand at attention. Yes… far too difficult of a first year indeed. “How are you feeling?” “Tired,” she replied. “My muscles ache, my mind is muddled…” “And your heart?” The girl bit the inside of her lip and looked away. “Let’s continue.” Evelyn pulled her mace from her cloak, and the girl stumbled a bit. No, she’d not have been expecting this, not after all the earlier training. This wasn’t how her master tended to do things… but after years like this one, changes in routine seemed appropriate. “I… I don’t…” “After a hard battle, will an aberration give you time to rest?” A dark look came across Anette’s face, and she forced her wavering aside. She shifted to a defensive stance, both hands on her staff, and cast a spell on herself. Likely her resist spell. Evelyn had to give the girl credit for trying, but she really should have learned by now – Evelyn was far from the typical caster. She advanced and swung her mace.Immediately Anette realized her mistake and moved to intercept with her staff, but reacted too late and was thrown off balance by her parry. “You forget Anette – always keep your opponent in mind. Higher resistances aren’t going to help against an opponent like me.” Anette regained her balance and cast a focused spell at Evelyn – Prism Ray, she’d called it. A focused beam of light flew at Evelyn, but she’d already replaced her mace with her cross and deflected the spell. “Remember your strengths. You’re a controller – not a striker. Orient the battle in your favor!” She could see the girl’s eyes moving back and forth, moving through various strategies in her head. “Faster, Anette,” Evelyn pressed, casting a Rime Strike enchantment on her cross. Anette snapped to it and slammed her staff down, sending shards of crystal up through the earth around Evelyn’s feet and forcing her to slow herself to maintain her footing – her Grounding spell. Smart, but too late. Evelyn stood her ground, swiping her cross through the air. Her psynergy flowed through it, picking up the enchantment and unleashed her Bitter Cold spell. A swirling blizzard tore through the air where Anette stood, and the girl yelped as the cold hit her. It didn’t do much damage, especially through her heightened resistances. It wasn’t meant to. Anette grinned, feeling justified in her earlier spell and thrust her staff forward to cast another spell. Nothing happened. Evelyn gave her a look as if to say ‘I am an anti-caster specialist, and you are a caster,’ which Anette seemed to understand, returning the look with a fatigued look of her own. She’d be feeling the energy draining effects of that spell now , on top of the seal the enchantment had added to it. Evelyn walked her way out of the rough terrain, pushing the attack. With no choice Anette moved forward to meet her master. Good! Never give up, keep pushing even when you feel you’re at your limit. Anette attacked first, thrusting her staff forward – but Evelyn knocked it aside with her cross and spun, sweeping the girl’s feet from under her, the difference in combat experience made abundantly clear. Anette landed on her back, her face gazing up at the sky and gasped, her eyes going wide. Evelyn grinned. The two were silent for a moment, and Evelyn took the opportunity to sit beside the girl and gaze into the scene herself. It was the Longest Night – the day between years, when the day was the shortest, the night seemed to last forever, and one year faded into another. “It’s… so beautiful…” the young acolyte said, her eyes filled with awe and wonder. Evelyn nodded. Above them, the stars shone magnificently, their light being brighter than they would have been on any other night of the year. “But… how? They’re never this clear…” “It’s the city, actually. So many lamps are kept lit at night it tends to drown out the stars. Even at this distance, atop this hill, there usually is enough light to get in the way. This is the only day in the year when those lamps rest, along with every other soul.” Anette chucked. “Too much partying to do in the coming day to let fatigue get in the way?” “Something like that.” Evelyn could hear the smile in her own voice. She remembered her first time doing this too – her master had brought her here, gave her some training and knocked her down. It was never the blow that took one’s breath away – not on this tradition. That view… it never got old. Not a tree to obscure it, no lights from below to wash it out. No sounds from the city to distract. Pure. Pristine. “I… I miss Rayce.” Rayce… he’d been a great inspiration to the girl. The way he used ice on the battlefield… it was as though he was playing a game and everything around him were the pieces. He’d manipulate it so that his allies always had the advantage, that the foes always seemed to face an uphill battle – things would just slide into place as he made the battlefield his. Anette had wondered at his tactics and strategy, and had learned a lot in such a short time. And then… Mura happened. The whole town brought to ruin by aberrants and eldritch. An oversight of a single person, who was then given enough time and resources. One person, one portal… and hundreds of lives lost. It was a brutal reminder of their task. Had it not been for Rayce, it could have been much worse – certainly Evelyn and Anette wouldn’t have gotten out alive. It didn’t change the fact that he’d given his life to stop it, though. And that? But a single event in this long, terrible year. They’d been worked ragged, and had lost many, many friends. Some even said that the Church of Salvation was losing its touch, that they simply weren’t doing enough to keep the citizens of the Empire safe. If only they knew how much worse it could have been… If only they’d seen it too. “Last year… last year was…” “Terrible?” Evelyn suggested. “Hard,” Annette replied, her voice aching. Evelyn had to agree. “As the old year fades, we have a new year to look forward to.” The two were silent for a bit longer, taking in the moment. Anette was the first to break it. “Yeah. A better year. No more fallen friends.” “No more fallen friends.” It was clearly what motivated the girl – that desire to never again feel so helpless when it felt like the world was crumbling around you. No, the job of the faithful wasn’t simple politics – it wasn’t about the Aeolian Empire’s tensions with the Tellurians, or the defense of the Wendelites from a barbarian horde. That was the stuff of soldiers and politicians. No, the calling of the faithful – the priests, paladins, inquisitors, avengers – it was to protect the people from otherworldly things, things that weren’t born of the Brothers’ light. It was the defense against the jealousy of the void, which sought to reclaim itself from Weyard. It was the struggle against those misguided fools who made pacts with unknowable gods of other realms and were tricked into opening the way. There was no time for politics, and politics knew it. She was grateful for that. There was no way the Tellurians were turning away emergency aid from a Salvist Mission, not when lives were at stake. Theirs was a call that transcended borders, peoples, and even religions. One didn’t have to agree with which gods to worship – every religion had their own version of Inquisitors and Priests. They were called something else, sure, but the job was the same. To save people, no matter who they were. Evelyn sat up and stretched out a bit. She looked over at Anette, who in her exhaustion had fallen asleep. She stood at the peak of the hill, staring into the stars. She smiled. “May the Brothers bless us and our mission in this coming year, and may the people find peace beneath Their light.” Edited by WitchRolina, Mar 21 2017, 12:25 AM.

Ooh, this is comment open- It's a beautiful story, and the writing is too. A self-contained unit with its wider world made clear, description intuitive. Love it, probably gonna follow the concept train. :3 |
