As some of you know, I know close to nothing of the Golden Sun games, and am in the board because of the D&D group(Fraud Confirmed), but I am going to start playing the games, and was wondering if I should start at the start, or If there was a particularly good one to start with. Any Recommendations? |

Huh... there's two ways to approach this. A: Start with Dark Dawn, then go back and play the GBA games in order B: Play Golden Sun, then The Lost Age, then Dark Dawn Choosing path A minimizes problems with Dark Dawn, as it'll be your first game in the series and you'll have nothing to compare it to. It's the best way to enjoy that game, imo. The downside is that DD refers back to the original games, so you might not clearly understand some things at first. Choosing path B takes you in the order they came out. You won't have any confusion over slight story things in DD this way. The downside is that pretty much everyone who takes this path hates DD. |

Is it a bit like watching starwars, where you have to get phantom menace out of the way at some point.

Pretty much. You're more likely to like Phantom Menace if it's your first star wars, and won't quite understand all the flaws people saw in it until later. Dark Dawn (aka DD) can be found for the DS. It's best played legit (DS emulators are garbage), and copies are easy enough to find. Golden Sun (aka The Broken Seal or TBS, as that was its subtitle in japan) is for GBA, and if emulated you'll have access to the GSHC's mods. Golden Sun: The Lost Age (aka TLA) is for GBA, and if emulated you'll have access to the GSHC's mods. Chronologically, they go: TBS → TLA → 30 years pass → DD |

30 years pass is never a good sign. I've decided that I'll get through them quicker if I play the original first, mostly because I already have a GBA emulator. So, I'm getting the first game now. |

To be honest, in this specific case, the 30 years pass was a good call from them, because the first 2 games concluded very well and the story is a slow paced world, so there was no plot material left in the world for the next many years to come. There was still a LOT of interesting side lore though, but no actual plot so it wouldn't have worked very well to have a direct continuity. |

Yeah, start with the first game first. Do not play the second game first- if you do so you miss out on Djinn, Summons, a Bonus Boss and Several Items. |

Well yeah - it only makes sense to play TBS or DD first. TLA is a direct continuation of TBS with transfer data and all. |

Just whatever you do, never EVER start with Lost Age. It's like going to a play right after intermission and saying "I'll watch the first part later". I know a lot of scrubs who started with DD, so seems to be a popular choice, but I think that's mostly because of how easy it is to get, huh. I'm very anti-emulation but it seems there isn't any way around that for most people, so do as you please. |

Starting with DD would be fine I think. They do refer back to the first two games a lot, but not enough to spoil the originals entirely. And you can enjoy DD without understanding the references. |

If you want to there isn't really any problem with starting with DD, but I think the best choice would be to start with TBS and TLA. Personally I started with DD but that was only because I was young and unaware of the first two games when it came out. Also, DD isn't bad: It's just the weakest of the three games and personally I feel it would have done better as a stand-alone game than as part of a pre-established series. |

Personally, I started with Golden Sun: The Lost Age, so I always find this particular topic rather interesting. I think the choice of first game will affect who your favorite protagonist is, and as such how you view the rest of the series. As glad as I am to have been introduced to the series via The Lost Age, I will admit that figuring out the basic controls of the game was frustrating at first. I didn't find the story itself to be much of a problem—the prologue did an excellent job of recapping things, which helped a lot. I did wish that I could visit areas from the first game, but what can ya do? (I will say that not knowing specific details about bosses in the first game made aspects of bosses of the second game a surprise for me, and thus far more meaningful.) I'll admit Dark Dawn was a bit of a disappointment to me… but that's largely because I'm more interested in Felix's group than Isaac's group. If you go into it with an open mind, seeing it as world-building rather than actual plot/adventure helps quite a bit. |

^ Same here! TLA the best forever! <3 Felix's group is my favorite though when I re-played the 1st one after years.. I started to like Isaac's team too <3 But! I'm loyal and I can't wait to draw some more fanarts of TLA finally! |

I can third the The Lost Age feels, i bought that one first. And it does change things when looking at the story. It becomes a mystery, a lot of it becomes a story figuring out the place of these characters and the broader story. And you figure things out. Golden Sun is not a story of extremes, as real life is, and you see one perspective, the first game shows the perspective of the people of Vale and the thoughts of the people of Vale, The Lost Age shows the perspective of Felix and the Proxans. And show that the evil the Proxans brings is not out of malice or wishing to end the world, but rather their plight of wishing the world not to be destroyed, and their village is right in the sightlines. There is more to this, maybe for later one day. |
