Still of the opinion here that the government shouldn't be involved in it to begin with...

What do you mean by this? Granting legal status and rights of marriage?

Itīs more complex that just the government trying to control who you can marry. Thereīs a lot of legal stuff that has to be considered, stuff like insurance policies or how to manage a divorce.
So in all itīs a good thing that government accept equality in marriage, why isnīt it the default itīs what worries me

I think rather than it being made law, it should instead have been merely a freedom given to vicars that they may decide to offer or not.

There's... no one else who can decide if it would be legal or not, though? Even if they give the choice to vicars or whatever, they still have to say "Yes, you have this choice."

Also also also, Ireland decided it through national referendum. First time it's been done that way, which is interesting, but it still means that it's not some random member of Parliament or whatever Ireland has that decided.

I don't think it's right that I need the permission of any government to love someone. They should have regulations to prevent discrimination, sure, but I shouldn't need their approval.

Loving someone and marrying them are two separate things. Marriage is a legal contract. The government is involved in legal things.

Marriage isn't all about love, like Ashtoro says, it is a legal contract between two people and state an comes with a bunch of rights and responsibility. The marriage deal seeps ito things like tax law, inheritence law, guardianship and custodianship laws, grants medical decision powers if the other is incapacitated.

I think it's important to note that these would be granted in those cases. Without those definitions in the law, you wouldn't get those rights or have to deal with a lot of trouble gaining any of those rights at all without those changes.

I agree these shouldn't be such a hassle, and perhaps for Ireland now they won't.
