... You know, I think I've just changed my mind about whether you can have a wasted vote... :p

Nah, in all seriousness, vote for whoever you want :) I'd just like to see more people voting, it's pretty depressing to see turnouts somewhere in the 60% range or lower, there's no reason that shouldn't be in the high 90%'s...

It particularly frustrates me that so many young people don't vote. Which means that politicians spend more time and resources keeping old people happy since they'll actually vote.

They just told me I can't vote because I'm not a British citizen. Which makes sense. But then I wonder why they insisted so much in that I had to register for voting. Apparently I can vote in European elections only, but I won't be here for the next ones. Frustrating...

Young people don't vote because all the candidates are old people that doesn't represent them in any way, politicians cater to themselves and their peers because their only concern is winning the vote, young people correctly see this as evidence that politicians don't care about young people so don't vote. It's a lovely cycle.

There are young politicians (in the UK at least), the ones going for specific seats and in local elections, even if not the party leaders or the others higher ups the party. It's not unreasonable: to run as leader you're going to need experience and connections, and to have those takes time.
You can only vote of the candidate with the closest opinions to you, it's not perfect, but it's what we've got right now and showing that you're willing to vote is the minimum you can do to change the way things are. I can't say for Canada, but in the UK there are a range of small parties which have opinions closer to that of younger voters (or at least what I perceive to be). Seeking them out and voting for them will do some small amount to changing things.

I'm not really one to comment, since I don't pay even the slightest bit of attention to politics beyond pundits making fun of them.

It takes way too much time and research to make an informed vote for way too little payback. Anyone who isn't spending like 40 hours each election doing their own research is just being caught up in media bias, charisma, advertisements, false promises, etc. So that's basically everyone.

It's an extreme opinion and I don't want to accuse you of anything, but that's how disillusioned I am with the system. I can't trust a single politician on their word alone, so surely the only way to vote is to research every issue, come up with my opinion, and then systematically match them to the candidates, then throw my vote into a sea of the uninformed and manipulated masses. No thanks, I'd rather spend that 40-odd hours playing video games.

Now we've had topic regarding voting before so I don't want to get into it again. Your optimism that the system has any value whatsoever is probably a good thing.

Yeah it's cool if you don't want to get into it. I don't want to start a full debate, but I think 40 hours is a bit of an exaggeration. I'd say maybe at most 5 hours of research is needed.
An initial screen of the candidate running in your area and there key polices will allow you to pick one or two that you can get behind. A read of their manifestos and then a search for news, views and criticism will allow you to put it into context. If you can't get behind them then go back and look at the original list.
The thing is no amount of research will tell you exactly what they'll do when they're in power so you can only do you best which can only ever be based on the media, the campaign promises and the history of the party. There isn't a right answer, and we can't see the future, but voting based on your principles at least tells the parties what's important to you.

I wouldn't even say I was optimistic, I don't like the current way things are, but I'm practical and this is the world and the country I live in I can only do what I can do. It wont change because I want it to and the current system does have value, even if it's far from perfect.

It's easier to remember all the bad things that happen in politics because anger is a stronger emotion. If politicians do something we dislike it reinforces our distrust, but if they do something good usually the response it provokes is "well its about time" then we all move on. Even then the memory can be tainted by bad things: for example this current government made gay marriage legal, that's an amazing step forward for equality, but I passed the event with a shrug, because of course gay marriage should be legal, it should have been legal ages ago and my resounding memory of that time was anger at all the hateful and ignorant comments made by those opposed to the movement.

Sorry I was meant to be dropping it, but instead I made a huge post.
That's the last I'll say.

According to exit polls, tories win again, and even get more seats. Liberals lose almost everything, and SNP wins lots and lots and lots of seats. UKIP stays the same.

Yeah, I've seen another poll that has it a lot closer. We won't know for sure until the actual results are in, but it's looking like another Tory win depressingly, though without a majority yet again. If the Tories do win, I don't see Milliband staying on as Labour leader for much longer honestly.

Something I find hilarious is that Farage said he'd resign as UKIP leader if he lost in his own constituency, and some exits polls suggest that he has :p Would make up for a Tory win if that's true :p

3 million people voted for a party that wants to scrap race legislation that prevents people being hired based on the colour of their skin. For a party that wants to treat immigrants and second class citizens and whose leader on live TV declared that we shouldn't treat foreign HIV victims because of the (utterly tiny) drain it puts on our NHS.I don't think I've ever been more disillusioned with the country I live in.

I hope Farage loses Thanet South but even if he does, he's won. We'll get an EU referendum and everyone who voted UKIP yesterday will vote to leave, along with a good chunk of Tory supporters. Still. I hope Farage loses as it's the only good that I can see coming out of this.

Grumble grumble, conservatives... more cuts to public services, less tax on the rich...

I feel bad for the Liberal Democrats.

I think Labour ran a poor campaign and deserved their catastrophic losses in Scotland, even though I wish they'd done better.

Sigh... twelve percent of our nation is openly racist and even more who wanted to vote UKIP, but decided tactically that conservative was a better option.

I don't think I've ever been more disillusioned with the country I live in.
For me that came with the farce that was the AV vote...

Moving north of the border to join the rest of my family in Scotland is looking a lot more appealing now, I'll be honest. A Conservative coalition would have been bad, but an outright majority, however small, is a lot worse. The Lib Dems kinda had this coming, a lot of their voters felt betrayed after they went into the last coalition, and then barely seemed to have an impact on Tory policy.

While UKIP haven't won amass of seats, the increase in the number of votes they got across the board is pretty damn terrifying. It'll be interesting to see what happens to them if Farage does quit. I'd love for them to disappear back into obscurity, basically like the BNP did last time round, but I really don't see it.

Ah well, maybe this time round the Conservatives will finally see fit to actually fix the damn country. It's not like they've already had five years to do that and failed to live up to their promise... -_-

I do say these results are not too unsurprising in the general European political feeling. I've seen the same parties grow and become bigger here as the UK elections. France is doing similar things, Germany has been doing similar things. Generally the extremely nationalist/racist party, like UKIP is going to be getting a lot of votes. A whole lot of people are voting for these parties and usually under incorrect pretences.

I hate the current political climate in Europe (and the world in general)
