ĄFeliz cinco de mayo a todos! We had flan and empanadas in my Spanish class, both were good (though flan is admittedly a strange food).

I love both those things. What filling was in the empanadas?

Flan is awesome! I didnīt knew it was considered a "rare" food...
Fun fact, 5 de Mayo is NOT Mexico Independence day (Itīs actually September 16th), itīs actually the date of a battle we won in Puebla against the French. But we do get a free day which is nice.
Enjoy Mexican Food, put some extra salsa in your tacos and be brave!

Well it's actually pretty funny, I don't think flan is a particularly foreign food, but it was mentioned in a dialogue and most of us weren't exactly sure what it was? So when we were told that we could get extra credit for making food today, like three people made flan. :P

The empanadas were fried and filled with beef.

Mmmm.

I had rice with black beans cilantro and lime juice. Some avocados and chicken too to round it out.

The best day.
Yes, let's celebrate a battle in an unimportant war that Mexico lost! It's like a slap in the face in honor of mexican culture!

We won that battle, but we lost the war, I wonder why it got so popular on the United States? I mean, we donīt even celebrate it or anything...

All I know is that the people I know from mexico aren't big fans of the holiday. I'm guessing it's an excuse for us in the US to get drunk or something.

It's much more important in chicano culture than actual Mexican culture, from what I understand.

It's an excuse for Americans to go to bars and order margaritas and eat "Mexican" (a.k.a. Tex-Mex) food.

Kinda like what St. Patrick's Day is here.

Tex Mex is as mexican as Taco Bell. Which is to say it's not. At least us texans make the distinction. ^-^;

Authentic Mexican food is quite good, but a distinctly different flavor from Tex Mex, which is a blend of flavors, and Taco Bell, which is a genre of food all of its own.
