I already have his address from the Christmas card, so if you want to PM me with what the problem is I can help.

On the envelope, all you should need is:

Harly Harlyslastname
1234 Harlyliveshere St
City, MI 12345
United States

Post code is the five-digit 12345 on the third line. There's actually a longer version of every post code but we never use them.

Uh, what do you mean by postcode I guess?
A full example address I guess would be:

Harly Baron
1234 Place Drive
Chicago, Illinois 53546-1234

The last four digits of a zip code are optional. I dont actually know much about what that even is or how you find it out, vast majority of places seem to ignore it.

You also have to put your own. I'm not sure how that works for mailing from out of the country though. I assume there should be a guide online how to do this exactly.

I'm not sending anything to him directly though you see. I'm buying something for him that will be shipped from an American seller to him.

I just don't understand the lack of individuality in the postcode. Here in Britain every house has its own one but that number you have seems to be for the whole town!

Depends on the size of the town. Wichita has a bunch of zipcodes. Our suburb, Derby, has only one. I've lived in Wichita my whole life but I've had a total of three different ones.

There is the zip code for town, and then each house is uniquely identified by that plus street name plus street number. So my house is on Golden Sunrise Circle and it's house number is 1111, and Sagie is next door to me on Golden Sunrise Circle and her house number is 1112. And we're both in Internet city in the state of Weyward, and we're both in the section of Internet city where the zip code is 22222. So that 1111 vs 1112 is what differs between us.

Ok I've bought it, and I left the seller a note with the address explaining what's happening just in case I did it wrong.

This is very sweet of you, Catman! But yeah what the others said. You include city and state and all that, and then I have two more numbers: zipcode which is shared by a bunch of people in an area, and then my street number which tells them which particular house I am.

The US has that too - you have the general postcode, which is for the area, and the ZIP+4, which is for the specific location within it.

In my experience in the USA we barely use the ZIP+4 format.

Most of the time the address is listed as: Specific House Address > Street Name > City Name > State Name > 5-digit ZIP Code > Nation Name

I was always a bit curious how zip codes work in the U.S. 5 digits didn't seem to be enough, but I guess they really need all that detail.

Canada has a six-character string, in the form of letter-number-letter number-letter-number (e.g. A1B 2C3). A single postal code can range from part of a very large building to the entirety of a small town. In usually corresponds to a residential street or an apartment building. You're still required to write out the entire address, which is the same as America except with the postal code instead of the zip code.

We also have a unique postal code H0H 0H0 so that children can write to Santa Claus.

British postcodes are LL90_9LL (L for letter, 9 for mandatory number and 0 for non-mandatory number), for example my old house was TA18 8DT. TA18 is the area, TA being the general area and 18 being the specifier. The last three characters are the individual house bit afaik.

Our Zip codes are actually 9 digits long. It's just that they only need the first 5 to figure out where to send it. From there, it's just sorted by street address, I think.
