Doesn't necessarily have to be realistic, but I think it would be fun to see what practical ideas we can come up with. Personally I would like to see a super-efficient solar cell that can power errythang. |

Teleportation. My god, teleportation. Or at least cars that drive themselves so I don't have to deal with traffic anymore. |

A small scale weather machine capable of being linked together with similar units for enhanced effects. Each device would have a built in monitoring system and an emergency shut down feature to prevent abuse. |

From the aesthetic point of view, either realistic holograms or virtual reality. I would love to design beautiful palaces and deadly labyrinths (and laugh maniacally from the distance when people fail to cross them). But if we are talking about useful things, I would prioritise the Friendly AI. |

I wanna see some form of FTL technology or an Earth based space elevator. Those would be extremely cool. |

They already exist but require more testing before being released to the public. |

^ That's what I meant. I think Google's self driving cars for street view are a good example of them getting use. |

An easy way to make inexpensive, nutritious food (and to distribute it everywhere). Some means of colonizing other planets. |

Hover shoes. They would be so boss, and they may be a bit more likely now that we're experimenting with hover boards. |

Others have mentioned things that spring to mind for me (self-driving cars could theoretically be the ultimate answer to the terrible road toll which, which has affected nearly every family in the developed world including mine), but here's another one: a 100% prevention technique or at least a big delay for Alzheimer's. Thankfully, there's signs that this is going to happen thanks to research in using ultrasound to safely motivate the brain's natural barriers and cleansing cells, purging the natural toxins that cause Alzheimer's from the brain. It's already seeming to work in animal testing, which is a big step and could already have numerous applications. That's Australian research for you. Another one that comes to mind: nuclear fusion power. Unlike the current deadly, toxic process involved in nuclear fission, fusion has a huge potential because it's safe (the chain reaction which can result in meltdowns literally cannot occur with this type of reactor), generates massive amounts of power, pollutes very little and apparently eats its own toxic waste. Scientifically, the theory is all there and experimentation is already in the early stages. So while renewables play the most important role in our initial adaptation against our effect on climate change, nuclear fusion could prove to be an essential pillar to humanity's long term response to energy needs and the desperate need to reduce pollution while we overpopulate the planet. |

To be fair, nuclear power is already an honestly stellar way to get energy. The risk are seriously overstated and the vast majority of what you get out of it is power and steam. |

Harly continues to be, like, the coolest dude. Nuclear (fission) power is nowhere near as scary as we're led to believe. The byproducts are nasty but we can store them safely in the short term and in the long term we can probably dump them in the sun or something. That's not to say that fusion isn't something to aim for and it's a genuine step up from fission, but fission in itself would be enough to take our reliance away from fossil fuels if only governments weren't so scared of it. As for what I would like to see invented, I'm with Nikki in saying a friendly AI, although the idea of it happening in my lifetime also genuinely terrifies me as it would change everything and we can't be sure we would like the results.
