To be honest I donīt want glory, I just want to win enough money so my girlfriend can do psychotherapy without worrying about money and enough to give my future children a fighting chance if they want to aspire to do something awesome. |

I just don't want to be forgotten or remembered as a disappointment.

If I'm lucky, I won't be remembered at all. My name will fade away into obscurity and life will go on... The games I develop, on the other hand, I hope to become classics. Or at least some of them. |

For me, I'd like my legacy to be my Children, and perhaps a video game or two. Also, I have this concept in mind for an architectural history of Catholicism that I'd really like to see created... I've already left a semi-permanent mark in the work I've done, though I don't feel any need to have my name attached to it officially. Creating the buildings people see and use every day is a pretty cool thing to think about, especially when you know they like the final product ^^ (A cool benefit of doing work in the area around where you live, you can go and visit.) |

Responses to this thread are inspiring. I wish what comes to mind here was not so pessimistic. I remember I used to be the optimist around here. Heh. What will be my legacy? Other than whispers that are soon forgotten, perhaps very little. The truth is that a lot of what we create turns into nothing but a tale eventually, and beyond that will fade to exist entirely. Even the greatest among us can be forgotten unless some permanent record is written about them. Most records kept by our species are now very impermanent in a sense (like the entire internet for example), and would not make good relics that can be read by another civilisation after some apocalypse or other. I'd still love to have been a writer who maybe brought a smile to a face or two. Maybe I already am that. Maybe that is enough. A strong legacy requires greatness, but not everyone gets to be great, to have a legacy that remembers them for generations outside of their family. Many want to be great and never become great, and not all of those people are weak. I wanted to be great for a long time, which ended a few years ago. Circumstance proved it can not and will not happen, because there is no possibility to exploit, no chance to take, no opportunity to open. Greatness requires a great strength of some kind, physical, mental, spiritual or even financial, but we don't all get a chance to acquire such gifts. Sometimes we have to accept the cards dealt to us. There's no use pining after things we can't have, and/or don't control. Legacy is one of those things. It's something you can try to create, but you'll never be able to enjoy it, hold it, or see it (unless you have a particular view of the afterlife). Legacy is strongly affected by other people's perception of you. Which makes it a dubious measure of greatness, and even more dubious regarding how good a person you really were or weren't. Of course, I'm happy to see healthy ambition. It's just hard not to think people get too obsessed with legacy and let it consume the other value of having life - enjoying it. |

Now that's precisely why I don't want my legacy to be a physical thing. Sure I could be called a genius and my name recorded in archives and books, but what good will that do me? At some point the name will disappear and someone will discover something that turns what I did obsolete. I want my legacy to be something else. Something people won't have to try to remember and will persist for a long time. Basically, I want the way I act in life to affect people and change their ways to make the world a better place. If this succeeds, as long as one person I influenced to good does the same to another who then does the same, I will consider my legacy to live on and still exist regardless of if anyone even remembers I existed. Names are just labels given to us anyway, if that's what is left of me after I die, I'd rather be forgotten, a label on a piece of paper is meaningless to me. |

I already have a few legacies. It's up to the recipients to pass that knowledge down. (Cooking, story crafting, paper airplane construction, the art of the lob shot, custom rocket modeling, knot tying, tie tying, general art techniques, desert trek tips, weather forecasting, environmental awareness,... maybe a few is an understatement. There are to many to list without extensive thinking on the subject.) Future legacy: Time will tell. |
