The Doctors expected me to be a girl; I know about it because one day my mom said out of nowhere "hey! I found your earrings" I wish I could have seen my own puzzled face xD |

International Women's Day is definitely a necessary celebration of women, who deserve total equal opportunity and safety in every situation, and are sadly denied this by patriarchal societies across the globe. To be truly equal, I do think that it'd be nice to celebrate men in some way once a year (I'm not aware of any International Men's Day), but only when equal pay is common in most nations. That goal is a long way off. Until that day, unfortunately, we men are over-celebrated and over-appreciated, and probably don't deserve such a celebration. Happy Women's Day, all you lady members. Rock on. |

No, sometimes they have a special date to conmemorate some event, in the case of womens day itīs because itīs the anniversary of a cruel event. in 1911 (if I recall correctly, a few details might be off, but I have the general idea) there were a lot of factories that relied on women to manufacture their products because they were cheaper than hiring men, the women did a strike asking for 8 hours a day work (they did like...15) and I believe better pay. The owner of the plant burned the factory with all the women inside instead of accepting their demands |

The closest thing I can find to this story is Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, which does not describe an intentional massacre. The workers were locked in to prevent theft, unauthorized breaks, etc. (common at the time, if horribly unethical today), with the fire itself being an accident, which was concluded to be the result of workers sneaking cigerattes in (in a factory full of fabric, gg). The event did lead to new legislation for factory safety and stronger unionization.

The official story behind women's day is a myth. It can be surprising given how much widespread it is, but it is not uncommon for a myth to extend like that. I have found this version, which seems more reliable. women's day Edited by Nikki, Mar 12 2015, 01:29 PM.
