In some movies they like to call swordfighting a language, fighting tends to get called just the same. I feel that fencing would be fitting for 'Los. |

I think if intelligent life is ever discovered outside of the Earth it will be absolutely fascinating for linguists to learn their extraterrestrial language. I'd like to see some non-verbal languages like ESP, alien sign language, or even how people could communicate through body language. |

I recommended to Diem, you as well now, a book by China Mieville called Embassytown. It explores the ideas of language and what it might be like for alien cultures in an interesting way. |

I recommend to anyone The Long Price by Daniel Abraham, in that they use hand signals to impart some meanings, it's interesting how he uses it to tell you the nuances and tone behind their communication. Additionally magic works in the form of poems so perfect they make real living embodiment of there concepts. |

I'm using my mobile (no access to my laptop till Wednesday) so it's kinda hard to use your quotes so: Tell me guys what do you want to know and learn about the Polish language and if you are interested in learning some basics. I'll prepare some info and lessons specially for you! :D But it will take a while coz I must get my things sorted. Btw, Fencing would be for me too :3 Swordfighting is a beautiful language.. Oh, yeah. It also depends on who's fighting and in what style.. Edited by Neshi, Jan 23 2015, 04:48 PM.

I am, of course! Some general stuff about the language as a whole and how it compares to English/any others you have experience with would also be good, but nothing beats stuff you can use (even it is the most basic stuff). |

Thanks for directing me to this thread, Harly. That's really exciting about your exchange program, it'll be exciting to hear where you end up going! And that's awesome about French/Spanish. I take it you prefer Spanish over French? I learned that I prefer German over Spanish pretty quickly once I got started on Deutsch -- I think my brain just likes cases too much. I'm a big grammar nerd and German grammar construction is just particularly yummy to me. But speaking of cases...
triple that when a random Homeric form gets tossed in unexpectedly amirite But seriously Sagie, Harly said you studied/are studying ancient Greek? Me too!!! Also, holy heck. Polish looks ridiculous. |

Yeah, I like Spanish a lot more. Grammatically, they seem nearly identical so far - some of the pronouns are different, sure, and I am sure there will be more noticeable differences down the line, but there is nothing major so far. Meanwhile, Spanish has a nearly-phonetic alphabet and French...has much more confusing phonology. A seemingly arbitrary number of letters at the end of most words are silent and the amount of digraphs and trigraphs and whatever is ridiculous. It basically feels like just Spanish, but made much more difficult to actually speak. :P It does have the advantage of having a noticeably higher number of cognates, but that isn't really enough to win me over. And yeah, I'm definitely excited about it too! I'm sure everyone here knows that by now, I kind of talk about it a lot. :P Finally, yes, the more I look at Polish, the crazier it seems. >.> I probably won't make too much progress studying it on my own, but hopefully Neshi will post that thread sometime soon. I kind of wish she hadn't flared up my interest in it, it isn't something I had too much of an opinion of before, haha. So it seems like I'm going to have to improve my Spanish for quite a bit. Current plan of attack is to start watching a bunch of movies in Spanish with English subtitles (at least for now), to try reading Chilean newspapers online (first in Spanish, and then with the page translated to English to make sure I actually had some idea what the heck I was reading), and to just redouble trying to memorize new vocab and tenses and stuff. I get the feeling that I am going to have to become pretty intimately familiar with conjugation charts. >.> Edited by Harly, Feb 12 2015, 07:48 PM.

I'd suggest watching movies with subtitles. You'll start recognizing the really common words after enough of it. |
