What do you like about it? It seems like it would be hard to get a good feel for a language without a higher degree of exposure to them.

I believe that they shorten/remove syllables when a word that ends with a vowel is right next to one that starts with a vowel, or something like that? My french teacher mentioned something about that today, though I am not sure that it is exactly that. But like, she showed us that "Je suis de Alabama" would end up "Je suis d'Alabama" or something like that so it feels right. However, it is only my second week so don't quote me on that. :P
Time to quote you on that =D
Oui, c'est vrai. Also the phrase "je t'aime" is another example. If the two vowels next to each other for french grammar didn't exist, it would have been Je te aime. There are some exceptions to the letter h like l'hôtel or l'homme instead of le hôtel et le homme.

I think it is called contracting vowels. Also I'm still using duolingo and it has been helping me with my french.

I used duolingo to help with my spanish vocabulary a lot, but in my experience it tends to not be so good about explaining aspects of grammar that you aren't familiar with. I probably will use it to supplement both languages when I get the chance though.

Does French have the weird rules with object pronouns that Spanish does, or is it more like English in that respect?
Hey Neshi - Out of curiousity, how would you say Polish compares to English? I am fairly interested in languages in general, and I don't get many chances to talk with Polish-speakers. :)

I didn't know that you were waiting for my reply, sorry!

Do you want to hear something about my language? Righto! But what I'm going to say is not very encouraging.. ^^'
So, Polish language is completely different than English and they have almost nothing in common, really. Polish pronunciation is a hardcore not easy for people who speak English or who simply are non-Slavic foreigners and probably is the most grammatically-complex language in the world. More info here -> [link] or [link]
But! Practice makes better! One day maybe I'll create a special topic and teach everybody some basic phrases in Polish, hm? :D

Dear Lord (looking at that second link), I struggle enough with irregular verbs in Greek that change form too much, I can't even imagine there being an entirely different perfect form. And noun declension changing with number more than just singular plural...aya. No thank you.

Huh, that does look pretty complicated, haha. Still, it's definitely interesting, and that is a good topic idea. :) I suppose I am just finding myself more interested in it than expected, between you and the Polish exchange student I met a couple of months ago... I keep running into really cool Poles, and it has taken me by surprise. :P

Do you find that the complexity of Polish gives it advantages? Like for example in word play with songs and poetry? Or does it have strict rules that make it less flexible?

The English term for the French grammatical term to shorten vowels is called "ellision." Like with "Le Jus D'orange."
Virgil, Aeneid II, 49: "Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes!"
"Beware of Greeks bearing gifts!"

Hmm.. I find it cool because our language is so flexible and very, very creative. You can play with the construction of phrases, with words and even create your own rules and give new meaning to them all. In the Polish language one simple word can have multiple meanings, multiple constructions and it's so funny! :D
