So I was kind of talking about this stuff with Cipher the other day, and I know that quite a few of you are studying foreign languages. For a couple of you, English isn't even your first language! So I believe a thread to talk about that stuff is in order. Do you speak any foreign languages, or are you at least trying to? Maybe you've always wanted to, but never had a chance? Is there any facet of a language you find interesting or odd? Post about it here! |

As almost everyone here knows, my primary language is Spanish and I learned English in my childhood so itīs really ingrained in my mind, itīs like I have a switch in my brain to think in English and Spanish mode, in fact I sometimes think of words in English more easily, and there are some words that I canīt translate to Spanish even if I wanted to (like awkward). I only have trouble speaking and listening, but thatīs in both languages so Iīm not sure if the reason is lack of knowledge of the language, so Iīm much better writing and I can basically read anything that itīs not poetry or with old words Iīm currently learning French, so far it has been easy but I canīt switch my brain into French mode just yet, but I want to learn enough to play videogames in french. |

The Japanese bit is really impressive! I feel like it would be really difficult, considering how different it is from English! Doesn't it have like 3 alphabets? I am in my second year of Spanish, and I've just started French. I wouldn't call myself fluent by any means, but I feel like my ability to speak and read Spanish is fairly impressive considering how long I've been learning it. |

Oops I didn't realize Diego posted. Diego, is the French spelling as weird for you as it is for me? I keep expecting things to sound more like the Spanish equivalents but it is not nearly as phonetic. And uh, I recognize a handful of Japanese words from anime and Kamen Rider but that is pretty paltry. |

Yes, I get confused on the pronunciation and I canīt do the nasal sounds, but I find French to be something of a mix between Spanish and English and I canīt still recognize a lot of words when I hear them spoken at a normal speed |

It makes sense that you would say that: French and Spanish are both from Latin, and then English is mostly French and German. The nasally sounds are difficult for me too. My least favorite letter is r, but I can't do much with those in Spanish either... (at least, not the rolled ones) |

Yeah I've noticed that in French too, where they're speaking it and I can't put the sounds to words. A lot of the words get compressed when spoken at conversational speed. I've learned Japanese as my first language (my parents didn't teach me English wtf) but I've long passed the point where English is my preferred comfortable language. The grammar and structure are not similar in any way haha. I think Korean and Japanese use very similar structure though. |

Wait it's your first language? I did not expect that at all, considering where you live! |

After many years of studying french, I still get confuse with some of the words and spelling whenever I conjugate a verb. There are videos on youtube that I find to be helpful with my french pronunciation. My first language was suppose to be my native language but my parents just gave me a language dictionary that translate each word in english. My native language is derived from spanish. |

I'm an English major, so, uh, that. But I also did a semester of Latin, so I have some familiarity with construction and vocabulary--being in church choir, I sing a lot of Latin too. I've also studied Ancient Greek for four years, going on five. I can read and pronounce it proficiently, though we don't practice composition so that I'm not so good at, though if given enough time I could manage. |

Yeah, it's because my parents were a-holes and didn't bother to prepare me for learning the language of the country I live in. I remember it was actually forbidden to speak English inside the house, I had to learn it all at school in ESL class. Ironic that years later I would be taking ap English in highschool lol. |
