Ok so there's less choice here...

I can't say that either Chalis or Blados left much of an impression on me.
And to be fair it's always been able Alex *cough* I mean Arcanus. (seriously though, what a rubbish name. If you get rid of the arc part....)

Well if there is anything I know about Golden Sun, it would be that I hate Alex more than anything.

How dare he seize all that power like that. How dare he use that power to threaten incapable people. How dare he exist inside a videogame preventing me from beating him to death with my bare hands.

Can I go with none of them? Blados and Chalis were total non-entities, with completely unexplained motives, and Alex becomes more and more annoying with each passing game. I actually liked him in GS1. Camelot, if you ever do make a GS4, please for the love of the elements actually DO something with Alex at long last -_-

Yeah, all the names were dumb. At least they made some sense in Japanese: Spade, Heart, and Ace. Might have sounded pretty cheesy if they kept them in English though, I guess.

Yeah, Alex wins just by being someone who really had a reason to be cared about. All that Blados and Chalis really did was blow up a door, and fight us three times.

Alex was my least favorite for hogging the spotlight. The half mask and name change made it worse.

Blados could have used more character development. Him and Chalice spiced up the story regardless, though it would have been nice if their motives were explained. Maybe they wanted to hasten the Mourning Moon's appearance to destroy it.

I feel like I'm the only one here who actually enjoyed DD.

I mean, I'm in agreement with everyone here, Alex was annoying as hell (See here: http://sumomosushi.deviantart.com/art/Die-Alex-354643365 ), Blados and Chalis were disappointing villains at best, and the game certainly didn't hold up as well as the prior games and might have done better as it's own thing rather than a spin off/sequel/spiritual successor of Golden Sun. Whoever made the game probably only looked at the previous games' success and thought slapping on the GS name would make DD a success.

But the reason I happen to enjoy DD and replay it often is it was the first GS game I owned. I had some money to get myself a game, my sister couldn't choose between it and a different game (I think it was Scribblenaughts). I told her to let me get DD and I'll tell her if it was worth her money.

To be frank, I thought it was well worth my money. Without any prior context to the GS series, it was a pretty good RPG. And when I found out it had "prequels" I freaked out and saved money like crazy and looked everywhere in my town for a copy of Golden Sun and Lost Age.

I got Lost Age first and played it, laughing to myself about the fact I was playing the series backwards. Then I got Golden Sun at a convention in my town and ran to an ATM to get my money and bought it effective immediately.

Mr. Spinel can confirm that I was halfway done with GS1 within a few days and had to put the game down to make my first play through last longer.

So honestly, Dark Dawn might not have held up to the name of it's predecessor, but I still love it for showing me a great series.

Yeah, DD being your first GS is probably why you see it as favorably as you do, and why a lot of us tell people new to the franchise to seriuosly consider playing that one first.

The big problem with DD is that... well, I've played that game already. Twice. They didn't really progress or iterate on the battle system, so basically it has to rely exclusively on the story, which isn't one Golden Sun's strengths (the world, visuals, and potential is). You also don't have any points of comparison for Blados and Chalise, so they come across as far more threatening than if you had played the first games first (Saturos is really hard to follow up - he was a great villain).

I know, and I recognize these facts and I'm in total agreement with you. Dark Dawn just holds a special place in my heart because without it, I don't think I would have known about this gem of a series.

It's not a completely bad game either, just not a good sucessor. I mean heck, there's a reason we're using DD as the basis for our icons now. :3c

The big problem I have with DD is that, while Lost Age had a great ending it still left a couple mysteries a mystery, huh. And then DD showed up and instead of giving us answers it added more to the world to give us more questions.

I actually have a very similar perspective, DD was also my first GS game and how I got into the forums and everything, and I only played the originals later. I really really enjoyed DD when I first played it but after playing the originals eventually, I started to understand why everyone was complaining, and agree with them a lot. However, I completely agree that it deserves some sort of recognition for introducing me to a series I really enjoy, and besides that it isn't a bad game at all - Just, as Rolina said, a bad successor to GS.
