:?: What are you celebrating this Christmas?

:MarsStar: Is it a religious holiday for you?
:MarsStar: Or is it just free time to spend with your family and get some nice gifts?
:MarsStar: Or both? :MarsStar: Or maybe something different..?

As of now, Christmas is not a special day to me.

In fact, I think that, outside of any religious belief,
this day has become, in the occidental world,
the day to celebrate being together and home feeling.

Maybe it's because most of the occidental world
is quite fairly christian tradition based,
due to colonialism and some other now long gone actions.
(But, let's not think too much about that, for now...)

For the record, I grew up in a non religious home.
But, however, I'm fairly knowledgeable on religious things.
(And I learned quite a lot about all the faiths.)

So...
Let's talk about the religious part of Christmas!
Basicaly, it is intended to celebrate the birth of Jesus of Nazareth,
who is considered a prophet by some faiths, and quite a good man otherwise.

This good man is maybe not born on the 25th of december in a stable,
and, I'm quite sure he is born half a decade "Before Christ".

But, all of this doesn't matter!

Christmas is, first and foremost a day to celebrate being with others.
It being in winter is maybe also a good thing, because there is less outside work in winter.
So, it's the best time for people to stay together at home while it's cold inside.
It's the feeling of home :
being warm inside, with people you like, while it's cold outside.

In a few word, Christmas season may not be so special,
if you spend a lot of time at home with the people you care for.

But, you can be sure that most people will spend Christmas at home.
And, knowing that brings me faith that humans are still good at hearth,
maybe even more than Jesus of Nazareth was.

So, have faith in our kind and all feel at home at Christmas.

I'm also not religious. For me I like the more pagan aspects than the christian ones; the parts where you put a tree in your house and decorate it to celebrate life in a dark time of year (for those of us who live in places that get cold in December). It's something that gives me focus and happiness in a time of year that can be depressing, where it gets so dark that the sun only shines when you're stuck at work. It's set a couple of days after the shortest day of the year (in the northern hemisphere), so after christmas you can say 'the days are going to get longer'.

So for me its a time to see family, give gifts and celebrate; bringing light and warmth to the dark.

I view it as a religious holiday, and always love going to church every day on the Advent, everyone is just so happy then. I love my family and talk with them every day, if not in person then over the phone or with text, so I don't really see it any more special of a time for family. So, I guess I see Christmas in the most traditional sense, a celebration of God's promise to us.

I've never been the most religious guy, though I do treat the holiday with a level of spirtual respect since that is where its origins lie, huh. However, the enjoyment I get from Christmas is mostly just the general joyous atmosphere, though even that has kinda died on me as I got older.

Thinking about that is starting to male me sad. I probably oughtta start taking it for granted a bit less, huh.

Here is what Christmas is for me. It is a chance to see family members that I have not seen in ages. And to try to get that one Uncle to come out who constantly travels cause he is a wilderness man
When do I get a reward for constantly being M.I.A.?

It's honestly mostly free time and fun with the family for me. The gift part isn't really all that important for me, but it's a fun tradition, I guess. Really, even if there wasn't all that gift commercialisation thing linked with christmas, I'd still end up buying myself "gifts" in that period of time, assuming the lack of official holiday doesn't mean no more break and free time, since having guaranteed free time is a good moment to get new games or whatever else I might want, since there's time to enjoy them.

I don't celebrate anything what's connected with religious traditions, for me it's a normal day with a special dinner time in the evening. If possible, I just enjoy nice atmosphere and everyone's kindness during that time but every year is different and people's attitude can be awful sometime and it's not always a good experience. I wish people were more aware and kind not only during celebrations tho ^^'

Also I have hard time hearing all Christmas commercials, they're horrible and super manipulative. At least this year is not that intense at this point for me and I'm able to enjoy the atmosphere and all beautiful decorations around me.

I find ignoring commercials fairly easy. Granted not having watched TV in years outside of movie only channels with no commercials other than advertising their own upcoming movies and not listening to the radio because they replace the one program I really enjoy with Christmas music in December probably helps with that.

That's what I do too ; )
Other thing I don't like is that animals are tormented and killed (for example in my area we have awful traditions, a lot of fishes are sold alive in horrible conditions so they're dying for hours just to be brutally killed later) and ironically everything is just to "celebrate the day of birth and life, everything for God and tradition".
