Lovingly referred to as "Shit on a shingle" by the Military, SOS is a hearty meal that's simple to make and good for when you're on a budget. All you need is chip beef (Or sausage or ground beef to make gravy and biscuits, a popular Southern breakfast), flour which can be found in most homes, Milk, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce, as well as two slices of toast, most of which can be purchased under 10 American Dollars. Ingredients 1/4 cup flour 1-2 pounds ground sausage/ground beef OR 2 jars of chip beef (Image below) Milk (This I always eyeball) Black Pepper Worcestershire sauce 1) If using chip beef, you must repeat a soaking process every 30 minutes for a few hours. Put the beef in water and soak for 30 minutes, then change the water and soak again. Chip beef is preserved with an intense amount of salt, so it will be too salty if you start cooking it after one soak. To save your money, food, AND TASTE BUDS, PLEASE soak the beef repeatedly. If using sausage or ground beef, continue to step 2. 2) Place your meat product in a pan and get it cooking on mid-high heat. Once cooked, lower the heat to low and add the flour. Mix until flour is absorbed. If using ground beef, drain most of the fat out before adding the flour. 3) Add milk 1/3 cup at a time and stir. Once you have your desired consistency, season with pepper and Worcestershire sauce. 4) Top your toast with the mixture and enjoy! This is a meal that sticks to your ribs but provides immense amount of energy for the day. You could easily make lunch just a granola bar with this meal being eaten for breakfast. Leftovers are also guaranteed and still delicious reheated. |
