Hot pot is a popular meal in Japan and favored most during the winter months. Also referred to as Shabu-Shabu for the sound made when meat enters the broth, this meal is basically cook it yourself at the table. It serves as a wonderful family meal and it honestly is my favorite meal to prepare and eat with my family.

Ingredients

Thin sliced beef

Thin sliced pork

Tofu

green onions

Udon or shiramake noodles

Shiitake mushrooms

Beef/Chicken/Vegetable/Pork broth

Steamed rice

1) Heat up the broth. Once it's heated, transfer to a hot plate on medium-low heat and bring to the table.

2) Prepare your meats by seasoning them. Transfer to separate plates to avoid cross contamination.

3) Slice your green onions into thin slices. Slice a star pattern into the caps of your mushrooms.

4) Cut your tofu into smaller, bite-sized cubes.

5) Boil and cook your rice.

6) Boil and cook your noodles

7) Bring everything to the table and set it.

8) Cook everything to your guests/family and your own preferences, the excepting being the pork, cook that all the way through. Avoid placing your meats in direct contact with the noodles, as this causes the noodles to harden into rocks.

And that's it! Enjoy this winter classic with friends and family. This will be my last recipe until next month. See you then!

Shabu-shabu is pretty delicious! I had it a few times while living in Japan. There's also a Chinese version, of course, which is good as well!

Personally, in terms of 'hot Japanese soup things" I'd still put ramen at number one. But thankfully both are really easy to make! ^^

Don't worry! Hot plates are used for convenience but if you don't have one but do have a fondue set, you can use that and some petroleum jelly to keep your broth hot instead.
