Not quite. What he said is that a lot of innocent animals got mutated into monsters by the alchemic energies coming from the psynergy stones that rained across the world when Aleph erupted. Basically, most monsters in Golden Sun didn't used to be monsters. Sure, some existed before, but I imagine they were generally local to areas with strong alchemic influence, such as the rocks and lighthouses. |

That first paragraph is pretty much exactly how I would have described monsters, but with the caveat that humans are not monsters (I don't think I agree with Rolina's assessment that drakes don't fall into that category) - to my recollection, this would basically mean that every random encounter is a monster battle.
It's hard to tell for sure with the clothing they're wearing, but while they may have some civilization of their own, I don't think they're human. It looks like they only have a single eye, and their arms are very long compared to the rest of their body. And if they were human, the apparent random encounter rule I noted above would have just a single exception, which seems unlikely. Delfes raises an interesting point, though, with the pre-emptive strikes your party is occasionally granted, which would make you the aggressor. It's fun to think of things from the POV of your opponents, heh. I remember wishing, pre-Dark Dawn, for a game that would let you play through the story as the antagonists.
Huh. That's a very good point about Chalis! I guess I've tended to write off odd physical characteristics in main characters as being designed to make them more interesting/memorable. x)
Hm. I don't remember ever seeing explicit confirmation that we're killing things we're fighting against. In-battle text says something like "Enemy goes down..." (or maybe that's when protagonists get killed?). Saturos and Menardi, though not monsters, were certainly not killed when we defeated them (they fell through the lighthouse to die). Iirc, the Agatio & Karst - Isaac & Ivan battle in Jupiter Lighthouse ends with the antagonists winning, but even with their mean streak, they don't seem to have explicitly expected to kill the protagonists? They make some comment along the lines "Oh hey, you can still move." Volechek, Agatio and Karst only die post-battle in exceptional circumstances - basically, after they've expended additional energy assuming a form different from their natural state. But maybe killing is just considered too 'mature' to mention in a game like this, and the killing is all implied, heh. Edited by Ignatius, Dec 17 2016, 07:01 PM.

I will say that IS one thing I liked about Dark Dawn. Holy crap did people die in that game. Also yeah, RE: Slayers/Assasins, I could see them being some sort of elaborate bugs? Like, if you were to get close they might attack you with mandibles or something. |

You know, I'm pretty sure the assassin monster line is just based off the actual assassins. You know that muslim sect that murdered people? Admit it, the sprite looks exactly like that. Some hunched person wearing a turban, the lower part of their face hidden behind some kind of cloth, wielding two daggers. I really think that's all they are, humans out to kill you. |

Hm...that's a fair point, I suppose. How do you explain the one eye, though? |

Hehe, Chalis being some kind of ascended Siren is pretty interesting. I just kind of assumed they were Anemosians corrupted by Lunar/Umbral ambience, given that their symbol is pretty close to what the Anemos symbol is, they have airships, and clearly advanced technology. (I had a bit of a headcanon that now that Alchemy is back in Weyard, the Anemosians/Tuaparang are down to siphon back some energy for Anemos, in preparation for... something. Returning to Weyard? World-conquering weaponry? Who knows!) |

Explaining the "one eye" is simple! It's not. :D Zoom in on the picture, it's actually a jewel on the turban that's holding the feather. The eyes are a bit lower and there are two of them. They're the small coloured dots right above the mouth covering cloth. |

Ah, you're right, haha! Look at where the eyes are though - in line with the shoulders. That doesn't look very human to me. Also, glowing red and green eyes? I'm not convinced, heh. Edited by Ignatius, Dec 18 2016, 04:21 AM.

Maybe they're half human half monster hybrids? Leaving out the details of such interesting...uh, breeding choices, it could be that a group of people got corrupted by psynergy and twisted into a monsterish shape. This would give them just under human intelligence, as i imagine the transformation would have diminished them. It's interesting that they are called assassins though, as the term usually implies being hired. I wonder if someone put out a hit on Felix and Co, and the Assassins are like, underground half people half monsters for hire? |

Seems to me that the assasins are just hunched over. It looks a lot more reasonable if you look at it that way. Also, those glowing green and pink eyes are possibly goggles. I think they're just people out to get you. |
