Ah, Food Wars. The first cooking anime I ever saw and a pretty good one, too! The fanservice is a little unnecessary, but I can live with it. This is the recipe I used to re-create the famous "Gotcha!" Pork Roast! ![]() My final result was super delicious and declared a do again in my house. Which in my home is a huge deal when you're a geek. What you'll need: Potatoes (You'll need a lot and ones that are good for making mashed potatoes. I used golden potatoes, but learned the hard way those tend to be very difficult to mold and fall apart easily, so I'm gonna try Idaho baking potatoes next time. More starch to hold its shape in the end.) Rosemary and Thyme (Herbs! Herbs are essential.) Bacon (Thick cut and good quality is highly recommended.) 1 Onion (Stick to a white or yellow onion.) Mushrooms (In the anime, King oyster mushrooms were used. In mine, I used baby bellas because I couldn't find the king. Rip me. But in the end, any fibrous mushroom will do, just as long as it can absorb the flavor.) Red wine Butter Soy sauce Let's start cooking! 1) Boil your potatoes! Cut them first into even size pieces so they boil evenly. When you can stick a chopstick or fork in them with little effort, you're good to go. 2) While your potatoes are boiling, save time by mincing the hell out of your onions and mushrooms and saute them in a pan with a bit of olive oil. You want a light golden color. 3) Mash your potatoes and while you're doing that, add in your onions and mushrooms. And for goodness sake, DO NOT ADD MILK. This will utterly destroy the ability to mold the potato mixture into a roast shape. 4) Mold your potato mixture into a roast shape. 5) Wrap your faux roast in bacon. Use every strip you've got if you have to. Just make sure every bit of the potato is covered. 6) Tie it up with butcher's string to help it keep its shape in the oven. Place sprigs of rosemary and thyme between the string and roast. 7) I preheated my oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit, 190.556 Celsius, but at this point, I eyeball everything. Hence why there are no exact measurements. Place the roast in the oven and cook it for an hour to an hour and a half. Keep an eye on it though, you want a golden color on your bacon. 8) While your roast is in the oven, it's time to make the sauce. I eyeballed everything here, but if I recall, I used about half a bottle of red wine (The real kind, not the cooking stuff), about a third of a stick of butter, and a hell of a lot of soy sauce. Mix these components on medium heat on the stove and stir until the sauce has reduced and become sightly thick. 9) When the roast is done, there's gonna be a lot of juice and grease in your pan. DON'T THROW THAT AWAY JUST YET. I made this mistake, its a bad one. You need that juice. Scoop it up with a ladle or spoon and essentially baste your roast with it to make sure they get into the roast and are absorbed by the roast. 10) Place your roast and pour a generous amount of the sauce one to the roast. And congrats! You just made a delicious "Gotcha" Pork Roast! I love coming up with recipes to try, so I hope you guys give me input on what I leave here and what your creations ended with! |
