The Light's Justice

Greetings, everyone! It's this time of year again, where the weather gets just a bit colder. So in that spirit, I want to present to you all a Remastering of the two Elibe Fire Emblem games in the *New* 3DS style of Emblem. This topic is mostly a conceptual challenge, in discussing how we would go about handling this. It also serves as a more reasonable record for me that isn't just a text edit doc of skype logs.

Before driving into the meat of this, I'd like to discuss what brought this on. In a conversation with a dear friend (Tawny779, blame him for this), we came to the conclusion that the GBA Fire Emblem games had a lot of potential that was left undone by the nature of their release. Fire Emblem 7, known in the west as Fire Emblem, is a prequel to 6 (the one that wasn't released in the US). However, the stories of 6 and 7, while ostensibly linked, hold plot holes, almost contrary character motivations, and leave out Lyn's existence.

The first goal of this project was simply to try and rewrite the story of 6 and 7 to make them fit together. However, as our discussions progressed, it became clear to Tawny and I that both games have some flaws which could be addressed.

For instance, the final boss of Fire Emblem 6 almost feels tacked on at the end. All the story exposition on 'why this happened' is given throughout the final encounter, rather than revealed over the course of the game. The events of Fire Emblem 7's story are almost inconsequential because they have no weight on the story of the sequel.

Then looking at a gameplay perspective, the maps in six are at sometimes bizzare (Fog of War, Night, Weather, and Desert physics?), and 7 has more maps that are straight repeats from 6 than it has any right to. Add in an obsession with Killer Balistae, Fliers, and Beserkers in the early game, and you have an unfair experience.

Now let's talk about characters. 6 Comes from an earlier design period where players were expected to throwaway units and lose characters, so the total army size reached unrealistic degrees. While 7's roster size works on ammending this, there are still some times where it feels like a character is either completely worthless (Bors, Wendy) or crazy good (Wolt). It is good to have different power levels for characters, but six and seven could work on being a little more fair to some of them.

For better or worse, I greatly enjoy the ideas behind the new weapon triangle introduced into Fates - while there are issues inside that system, I believe it would be excellent to adapt it into this remastering. A slightly more *balanced* skill system is also something we would like to introduce, as the GBA era has had skills in the final installment, Sacred Stones.

In the vein of Fates, we would also like to discuss the idea of reclassing and split promotion lines. While this would lead to introducing new classes/renaming some of them, I think it would do well towards developing more options in a playthrough.

So the goal of 6 + 7 is twofold - first to unite the two games in the style of Genealogy (that is to say, with a first and second generation with an overarching story between them. Then, to provide people with a way to experience these old games in the vein of Shadow Dragon. (except less cruddy)

In a following post, I'll begin to post ideas for systems, characters, and how to handle this from a gameplay perspective. Until then!

Those who fight for Injustice, fear my name! As long as I stand, no shadow shall escape my sight. By the Holy Light!
