This is a short play I wrote that takes place in feudal Japan. It was written with a Shakespearean dialect and has Marxist overtones. Act 1 Scene I. A feild outside the castle. GYPSY at his stand. Enter to him DATE. GYPSY: Who's there? DATE: Nay, answer me: stand and unfold thyself! GYPSY: Long live the emporer! DATE: What have you here? GYPSY: I peddle grain. (A bell tolls from the castle) DATE: 'Tis now struck tweleve; Get thee to bed, peddler. GYPSY: 'Tis bitter cold, And I am sick at heart, But I will continue to peddle me grain. (DATE draws his katana) DATE: By order of Shogun Bu, return to thy home! 'Tis compulsory! (GYPSY unsheathes a dagger. They clash. BASARA thrusts his katana into GYPSY.) GYPSY: I am slain... (GYPSY dies. DATE sheathes his katana and returns to the castle.) Scene II. Inside the castle. SHOGUN BU on his throne. Enter to him DATE. DATE: M'lord! Long live the emperor! SHOGUN: You come most carefully upon your hour. DATE: My dear lord, A peddler laboured And by duty, I slain he But each death haunts me so... Pray tell, m'lord, why must the peddlers die? SHOGUN: (Laughs) Dear Date, Faithful basara of the Bu line Dare you question me so? (DATE coughs) SHOGUN: Fear not, Date For I will tell yuou nevertheless The peddlers sell grain of their own, And this grain peddling detracts from the purchase Of my farmers' rice. DATE: However, could not thou raise sale tax and spare their lives? (SHOGUN lifts his finger. DATE flinches.) SHOGUN: Dare not thou suggest motives! Continue thy slaying of peddlers! DATE: Y-yes, M'lord. (Exit DATE.) Scene III. Farmlands. (Enter DATE) DATE: These are the lands that the Shogun rules... (Enter FARMER) FARMER: Prithee, help our people! DATE: Pray, what say thee? FARMER: The shogun Bu hath taxed us greatly. We are forbidden to dine on the very grain we harvest And we haven't enough yen to feed our children. DATE: I knew not of this corruption And I know not if I believe thy tale But if I turn on my master I will surely be dishonored. (FARMER starves, dies) DATE: Hunger has slain he. I must speak to my Shogun. Perhaps I must fear not dishonor But do what's iight in its stead. (Enter SHO, another farmer) SHO: I will join thee in confronting the Shogun. (Exit DATE and SHO) Scene IV. The throne room. (DATE and SHO confront SHOGUN) SHOGUN: Date, why bring thou a peasant scum in the midst of myself?! DATE: Tell me, have thou taxed the farmers? SHOGUN: Their taxation brings wealth to this land. (DATE draws his katana on SHOGUN BU) SHOGUN: Thou darest draw they filthed blade on thy master? Then farewell! (From his throne SHOGUN BU unsheathes a spear. They clash.) SHO: An end to thy tyranny! (SHO pushes SHOGUN into DATE'S sword. SHOGUN dies.) SHO: We have won! Now begins an era anew! But I am wounded... (SHO weakly keels over) DATE: Our society is turning on itself My master is slain by my hand. I am without honor. (DATE turns his katana on himself.) SHO: No! Slay thyself not! (It is too late. DATE dies.) SHO: It was inevitable. But now the time comes to begin a new era. (He steps into the throne.) Change begins now. THE END |
